These were creatures from India related to the Heraldic Yale of Europe. They belong to a class of creatures called the Yali. The Yali have the body of a lion and the tails of serpents. They appear upon the pillars of Hindu temples and sometimes in art are seen on the backs of the Makara. They are said to be more powerful than the elephant and the lion. The Ashva-Vyala are different from other Yali having the head of a lion.
Other Yali include Sinha-Vyala, Shvana-Vyala and Nir-Vyala.
