A fearsome ancient Greek creature. The upper half was that of a human and its lower half was that of a spider. It had three heads, was fire-breathing and was the grand-daughter of Medusa. He lived on the Avetine plain- a charnel ground where corpses are burnt. He features in the tenth task of Hercules who was driving cattle across the land. Cacus stole the cattle by dragging them by their tail and imprisoning them in his cave. Hercules found the cave and destroyed the roof by removing rocks. In the fight between the two, Cacus was finally killed by Hercules strangling him with his famous ‘knot of Hercules.’
