This is an old hag from the Isle of Man who is also known by the name of Caillagh Ny Gueshag. As Caillagh Ny Groamagh whose name means ‘Old Woman of Spells’, she was a Giantess who was thrown into the sea due to her evil magic. She washed up on shore on St. Briget’s Day (1st February) and became Caillagh Ny Gueshag, ‘Old Woman of Gloom’. In this form she went around the land to collect firewood to dry herself. As a result the ensuing Spring was wet. The weather of the forth coming Spring is predicted by the weather on St. Briget’s Day. If the weather is fine then the Spring will be wet, but if it rains then the Spring will be dry and bright.
