A sea creature created by the god of the sky Zeus to kill Andromeda. It had the head of a greyhound a long body of a whale and a tail that split into two. The Queen Cassiopaea obsessively talked about the beauty of her daughter Andromeda that angered the gods. To appease the gods of her misdoings, she chained Andromeda to the rocks. The Cetus then came to devour her but was saved by Perseus who arrived with the freshly decapitated head of Medusa. The head was used to turn the creature into stone as are the powers of Medusa.
