The upper-half was of a man and the lower-half was a scorpion. It was an emanation of the goddess Tiamat in Babylonian mythology. They guarded the entrance to the Mashu Mountains but the hero Gilgamesh managed to evade their path but was warned by Girtablili that none who entered returned. The image of this beast was used as a Babylonian image for guardianship.
