A small mammal that has the ability to predict the coming of Spring. It would burrow in the ground and emerge in early February. If it saw its own shadow then it would retreat back to its burrow which was a sign that there will be six more weeks of Winter. If it stayed above ground then Spring would soon come. The Groundhog is used in modern superstition in North America.
