A Taniwha of the Maori legend and relative to the Horomatangi. It is a lake dweller and a giant lizard that guards the region of Tongariro. He created disaster when animosity arose amongst the villages to teach them to behave better. A horror story tells of the European settlers who took the sacred log of the lake that was said to be the essence of Huru-Kareao. They used it to build a church but the wood rotted quickly destroying part of the church. All the Christian builders and missionaries died of unknown causes soon after.
