A winged serpent of four legs of medieval Europe. It would hide in tall trees and shoot out at victims biting them in the neck. If someone approached the tree, the serpent would launch itself on the victims back and sink its fangs into its neck. Its name means ‘javelin’ which it got from its quick launching attack from the trees. This creature features in medieval bestiaries but was first found in the poem Pharsalia written by the poet Marcus Annaeus (39 65 AD).
