One of the Patupaiarehe fairies in Maori myth. She asked a man named Hautapu who was travelling in the mountains to marry her. If he did so he would be cursed to live in the mountains forever. He wanted to escape but feared her power. Hautapu tricked her into making a fire, since the Patupaiarehe are easily burnt. She did this but embers spat from the fire and landed on her foot. Her foot instantly started melting and she screamed in terror, running off into the woods.
