- Troublesome (behaviour)
Devilish creatures with dog or human heads, a human body, long tails and shaggy hair covering their body. They were nocturnal, lived underground and walked on their hind legs. In Greek mythology these creatures spent most of the year gnawing away at the World Tree that supports the Earth. During Winter they would come out and create chaos by destroying harvests, houses, stealing women and dancing with strangers. They would then return underground until sunrise because the rays of the sun would harm them. The World Tree would then begin to heal its roots bringing in Spring at which point the Kallincantzari would return to eating the tree. Any child born in Winter was branded on the heel to prevent him or her turning into a Kallincantzari.
