Called the ‘Pig Child’, the Kamapua’a was a gigantic boar of the Hawaiian Islands. It created the islands by pushing up mountains and earth from the sea bed and then shaped the land. He also sets off volcanoes and earthquakes. Having found a mate he produced many hideous offspring to the fire goddess at Pele’s dislike. Pele rejected the boar and so in revenge the boar challenged the goddess with an army of followers. However the other gods backed Pele and banished the boar to the lowlands.
