A creature from the tales of New Zealand. This was a female Ogre who had huge legs and wings protruding from her arms. She had huge drooping lips which she used to catch birds in to feed on. One day a man spotted the Kurungai Tupu in the forest feasting on birds. He tried to evade her sight but failed and was caught. She trapped him in her cave and sealed it shut with a boulder so that she could continue to feast on the birds. The man broke the seal of the cave by chanting the ‘karakia’ magic charm. He escaped but so too did one of the birds there that alerted Kurungai Tuku to this. Kurungai Tuku chased the man but the man skilfully skirted around the edge of a hot spring pool. The Ogre did not notice this and fell in to the hot spring and was scolded to death.
