A Black Dog the size of a calf with eyes like pewter plates. The Mauthe Dhoog has also been described as a black, shaggy haired spaniel. It haunted the Peel Castle on the Isle of Man. One story tells of the dog's hunting when the castle was occupied by military forces in the 17th century. One night a drunken guard to went to search and kill this dog and disappeared into the Castle. His loud cries drew his friends into the corridor where he was found quivering and talking madly about the Mauthe Dhoog. He died shortly after. The inhabitants of Peel Castle brought in a Methodist minister to exorcise the devil dog but he too befell a similar fate.
The Mauthe Dhoog is mentioned by Sir Walter Scott in The Lay of the Last Minstrel:
“For he was speechless, ghastly, wan
Like him of whom the Story ran
Who spoke the spectre hound in Man.”
