The name given to a creature from Westphalia in Lower Saxony, a place which is now Germany and Austria. This was a fish that had a large horn protruding from its forehead of which it would attack and sink ships. It was believed to live in the dark and murky lake of Darmsee. It has also been shown as inhabiting the ‘Marae saeculi’ in the world’s oceans and is an agent of the Devil.
