A god of the Underworld who is sometimes known to be a snake. He ahs the power to summon all the snakes and Dragons from the Underworld together under his command. Ninnghizhidda is known as the guardian of the gate and features in a story where the goddess Ishtar wishes to enter the Underworld in order to . She says to Ninnghizhidda
“ If thou openest not the gate to let me enter, I will break the door, I will wrench the lock, I will smash the door-posts, I will force the doors. I will bring up the dead to eat the living. And the dead will outnumber the living. ”Ninnghizhidda opens seeks permission from Ereshkigal, Wueen of the Underworld who allows the gates to be opened and Ishtar to enter. As Ishtar passes throuh each gate she sheds one item of clothing. But then naked in the Underworld Ereshkigal unleashes 60 disease upon her causing her to die. As a result of Ishtar being in the underworld all sexual activity stops on earth. The god Ea creates Asu-shu-namir, an intersexual creature to revive Ishatar with a bag containing the water of life. Ereshkigal is unable to prevent Asu-shu-namir and Ishtar is revived. She then makes her exit picking up her clothes along the way.
