According to the mythology of the Arrernte people, there were three enormous caterpillars that emerged from the ground a long time ago. For 45,000 years the Arrernte people have lived in Alice Springs and close to the caves and mountains of that area. They once documented the great story about the colossal caterpillars in the form of a painting that was done on one of the walls of the cave. Long lines of dark red and light orange are used to illustrate Ntyarlke and his two caterpillar companions.
According to legend 3 caterpillars named Utnerrengatye, Yeperenye and Ntyarlke dug great big holes as they worked their way up to the surface of the world. The tunnels they left behind still exist to this day and so the Caterpillars were known for creating the entrance to these underground systems. Unfortunately it was not long before Ntyarlke and his two companions faced an invasion by the Irlperenye, the green stink bugs of enormous size. Ntyarlke died in the struggle being decapitated by his bug opponent.
