A fire-breathing horse from the medieval story of Orlando Innamorato (Orlando in Love) by the Italian Renaissance author Matteo Maria Boiardo. The Papillon is the steed for the hero Roland, a champion warrior of the conqueror Charlemagne. The story denotes his heroic deeds and his death in 778 in a retreat from a failing campaign in Spain. Roland also rode a horse called Veillantif which was known for its great speed.
