A Centaur that features in the story of Hercules in his fourth labour to overcome the Erymanthean Boar. He kept a special jar for Hercules refreshment given to him by the god Dionysus. At a wedding the gift was given to Hercules. When the jar opened the smell of wine pervaded everywhere. Centaurs from all over were drawn to this smell and became restless and wild fighting over the liquid. A fight ensued and Hercules killed the Centaurs with arrows dipped in the poison of the Hydra. Pholos tried to save his wounded friend but was shot by an arrow that hit his leg. After the battle, Hercules buried Pholos and went along on his journey.
