An enormous bird from the tales of the Maori people. This bird stole people to take to the Otherworld to devour. A hero called Pungarehu went into the Otherworld with two trusted hunters. They trapped the bird and chopped off its wings and found the remains of the people who had become a victim of the bird. After killing the bird they returned to Earth to find that time had gone by very quickly and all the people they had known were now elderly. Another story tells how the hero Hau-o-Tawera made a net to capture the bird. Once it was captured into the net it was stabbed to death by Hau-o-Tawera and his men.
