A phrase used in many mythologies to denote a large fish that guards the aquatic inhabitants of the waters. In Teutonic or Gallic areas it known as the Mother or Guardian of Fishes, in the Fino-Ugric-speaking regions of Finland it is referred to as the Queen or King of Fishes. This creature also features in the myths of the New World. All the descriptions describe a creature covered in moss which matures into trees and various plant life. In the folklore of Alsace the Queen of the waters as it is called, has a palm tree growing on its back.
