A gigantic ox from the ancient Hebraic scriptures and the Old Testament. There were only two Re’em living in existence at one time, one male and one female. They were said to be as large as the mountains that they inhabited and lived for 70 years. One lived in the mountains furthest East and the other in the mountains in the furthest West part of the world. They came together only once in their lifetime to mate. The female gave birth to twins, one male and one female. When the Re’em calves were old enough to support themselves, the two adult Re’ems would die.

The Re'em also has a link to the Biblical Unicorn. Scholars came across the name Re'em whilst translating the Bible from Hebrew into Greek around 300 100 B.C.E. The description of the beast detailed that this animal was impossible to tame, highly noble and drew strong parallels to the Unicorn they were familiar with. Thus the word ‘Reem’ was translated to ‘Monokeros’ which directly translates into English as ‘one horn’. The Unicorn remained a part of the Bible for centuries.

There is also another notable reference of the Unicorn in the Bible. It appears in one description about a prophecy of a conqueror and his steed.

(Book of Daniel, 8:5):
“And as I was considering, behold, a he-goat came from the west over the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes.”

It is believed by scholars a that this is a reference to Alexander the Great who rode an untameable horse that was so special. The horse was called Bucephalus which means ‘ox-head’ which may have referred to the horns on its head.

The Unicorn also appears in the Book of Genesis as the first animal the Adam named. Also in the story of Noah and his Ark, the Unicorn would not board the ark but instead it swam beside it for 40 days and 40 nights.
