A Giantess or Gygr from Norse myth who was one of the Frost Giants. Her name can be translated as ‘Winter’ or ‘Shadow’ and she is the daughter of Kari or Thjazi. Her siblings are Thrym, Bel and Thiassi. When Thjazi was killed, she went to the gods for compensation. The gods offered her a husband and could choose anyone she wished, but she had to choose, seeing only their feet. She wanted Baldr, the god of beauty for herself and chose the most beautiful set of feet. These feet belonged to Ull or in other stories, Njord who was old and not so handsome. The two were married but refused to live with each other. When Loki the Trickster god killed Baldr, Skadi imprisoned Loki, chaining him down with a poisonous serpent held above him. However, Loki’s wife pleaded Skadi to release her husband, to which Skadi agreed.
