This was the progenitor for the race of winged men in the legends of the Maori people. He was thrown into the sea by his father. His father had already two great sons but was ashamed by his third, Whanau-Moana who was deformed. The baby was washed ashore and looked after by some compassionate people. When he grew up he developed wings and the ability to fly. He had children who were winged men and thus he started a race of flying people.
