She is a forest goddess that has the form of a smiling woman. She appears at the entrance of temples to welcome people in. One prince called Vijaya found a Yakshini that enchanted men to freeze them still. When the prince chased her into the forest, she transformed into an attractive girl who told Vijaya that his men would be released only if they married her. According to the beliefs of the sect Svetambara of the Jains, Su-Tara, an aspect of Tara is a Yakshini. In the wilderness the Yakshini is known as Ashvamukhi meaning ‘horse-faced’. These are women with the heads of horses.
